How to Take Better eBay Photos for SellBotAI

Learn how to photograph items so SellBotAI can identify details, measurements, flaws, and product codes while creating a strong final eBay photo set.

Photos serve two purposes in SellBotAI: they give the AI evidence to build an accurate listing, and they show potential buyers exactly what they will receive.

Those two photo sets can overlap, but they do not have to be identical. You can give SellBotAI informational images—such as measurements, labels, written notes, or product specifications—and remove them from the final buyer-facing photo set before publishing.

If you have not created a listing yet, start with How to Create Your First eBay Listing with SellBotAI for the complete upload, review, and publishing workflow.

The basic principle: If a detail matters to the listing, make it clearly visible in at least one photo. The AI cannot reliably identify information that is hidden, blurry, too small, covered by glare, or outside the frame.

Step 1 Start With a Simple Photo Setup

You do not need professional photography equipment. A modern phone, a steady hand, and a well-lit area are enough for most items.

Set Up the Shot
  • Clean the camera lens. Fingerprints can make an otherwise sharp photo look hazy.
  • Use bright, even lighting. Natural window light or soft, diffused lamps generally work better than direct flash.
  • Choose an uncluttered background. White or neutral backgrounds work well for most items, while a darker background may help a light or reflective item stand out.
  • Keep the camera steady. Rest your hands or phone on a stable surface when necessary.
  • Fill the frame. The item should be large enough to inspect without cropping off important edges.
  • Avoid filters. Buyers and the AI both need to see the item’s actual color and condition.
SellBotAI upload requirements: Upload JPEG images no larger than 16 MB each. The number of photos you can use for each listing depends on your current plan.

For buyer-facing images, eBay requires at least 500 × 500 pixels and recommends images around 1600 × 1600 pixels. Larger, sharp photos give buyers more useful detail when they zoom in.

Step 2 Photograph the Complete Item

Begin with a clear overall photo showing the complete item. This should usually become the first photo in the finished eBay listing because eBay displays the first image in search results.

Then photograph the item from the angles a careful buyer would examine in person.

  • Front, back, sides, top, and bottom when relevant
  • Labels, tags, maker’s marks, and model information
  • Buttons, ports, closures, controls, or moving parts
  • Included accessories, cables, manuals, or packaging
  • Decorative details, textures, signatures, or distinguishing features
  • Every flaw or area of visible wear
Show exactly what is included. Avoid including unrelated props or accessories that a buyer could reasonably believe are part of the sale.
Make the First Photo Count

Use a clean photo that shows the whole item clearly and face-on. Avoid text, logos, badges, borders, or watermarks. These additions are restricted by eBay’s Picture Policy and can prevent an image from being accepted.

Step 3 Give SellBotAI Readable Detail Photos

Overall photos help SellBotAI understand what the item is. Close-ups provide the specific facts needed to create accurate titles, item specifics, condition details, and descriptions.

Tags, Labels, and Printed Text

For clothing, shoes, linens, and similar items, photograph labels showing:

  • Brand
  • Tagged size
  • Material or fabric composition
  • Country of manufacture
  • Style, model, or product number
  • Care instructions when relevant

Fill the frame with the label and make sure the text is in focus. If the label is folded or curved, flatten it enough for the complete text to be visible.

Barcodes, UPCs, and ISBNs

SellBotAI can read product identifiers used by eBay directly from clear photos.

  • UPC or EAN barcode
  • ISBN-10 or ISBN-13
  • Manufacturer part or model number
  • Grading certification number

Photograph the entire code straight-on. Avoid glare, shadows, or a camera angle that distorts the bars or printed digits. Always compare the generated identifier with the physical item before publishing.

Take separate close-ups when necessary. One distant photo of an entire label may not contain enough readable detail. It is better to provide two sharp close-ups than one image in which every line is too small.

Step 4 Show Measurements Visually

SellBotAI can read measurements directly from a ruler or tape measure and use them in the appropriate item-specific fields and description.

This is especially useful for clothing, where the tagged size may not reflect the item’s actual measurements.

How to Photograph Measurements
  • Lay the item and tape measure flat.
  • Show where the measurement begins, including the zero mark.
  • Keep the relevant number clearly visible.
  • Take the photo from directly above to reduce perspective distortion.
  • Use a separate photo for each important measurement.
  • Make sure the tape is not twisted, covered, or pulled at an angle.

For example, you can photograph a tape measure across the waist of a pair of jeans, along the inseam, or from armpit to armpit on a shirt. SellBotAI can use the visible measurement when generating the listing.

Item measurements and shipping measurements are different. SellBotAI may read the dimensions of the item from your reference photos, but you must still enter the dimensions and weight of the finished shipping package in the listing form.

Step 5 Document Condition and Flaws Honestly

Condition photos protect both the buyer and the seller. They help SellBotAI write a more accurate condition description and help buyers understand what they are purchasing.

Include close-ups of:

  • Scratches, scuffs, chips, cracks, or dents
  • Stains, discoloration, fading, pilling, or fabric wear
  • Tears, holes, loose seams, or missing buttons
  • Corrosion, battery damage, or damaged connectors
  • Writing, highlighting, bent pages, or damaged book covers
  • Missing parts, replacement components, or previous repairs

Use enough surrounding context that the buyer can tell where the flaw is located. If a defect is very small, take one photo showing its location and another close-up showing its detail.

Visible evidence is better than a vague warning. A clear photo allows SellBotAI to describe the issue specifically and gives buyers more confidence than a description such as “normal wear.”

SellBotAI can detect many visible condition issues, but it cannot test how an item functions or know about a problem that is not visible. Add important functional information through a Listing Hint and verify the generated condition description yourself.

Step 6 Use Reference Images and Written Notes

Some useful listing information cannot be communicated through ordinary product photos. SellBotAI allows you to include informational images for the AI and remove them before the listing is published.

Useful Reference Images
  • A handwritten note listing measurements, dimensions, or weight
  • A whiteboard showing test results or included accessories
  • A screenshot containing technical specifications
  • A photo of a product manual or specification label
  • A note explaining a functional problem that cannot be seen
  • A list clarifying which pieces are and are not included
Review reference images before publishing. Remove account information, addresses, private records, or other sensitive details. Screenshots or images copied from another source should normally be removed from the final eBay photo set unless you have permission to publish them. Review eBay’s Images, Videos and Text Policy before using third-party material.

If your plan includes the Listing Hint field, you can also type a short clarification before generating. A concise hint is often easier than creating a reference image when the information fits within the field.

Step 7 Upload the AI Source Photo Set

On the Create Listing page, make sure the upload area includes every photo you want SellBotAI to analyze before selecting Generate.

Place your strongest overall and identifying photos near the beginning of the set, followed by the supporting angles, labels, measurements, flaws, and reference images.

Photos added after generation are not analyzed automatically. Adding a new photo in the generated listing editor adds it to the final eBay photo set, but it does not rerun the AI or update the generated listing data.

If information is important to the AI-generated title, category, condition, item specifics, or description, include it in the initial photo set before generating the draft.

Step 8 Build the Final eBay Photo Set

After generation, the eBay Listing Images section contains the photo set that will be published to eBay.

You can:

  • Remove AI-only reference images.
  • Remove duplicate or unnecessary close-ups.
  • Add new buyer-facing photos.
  • Reorder the photos by dragging them.
  • Choose the strongest overall image as the first visible photo.
Your original AI evidence remains available. SellBotAI stores the original AI source photo set separately from the editable eBay photo set. Removing or rearranging a buyer-facing photo does not remove it from the evidence used for category regeneration.
Photo Checklist

Before generating the listing, confirm:

  • The item is sharp, well-lit, and shown against an uncluttered background.
  • The complete item is visible from all useful angles.
  • Tags, labels, model information, and product identifiers are readable.
  • Measurements show their starting points and values clearly.
  • Every important flaw or condition issue is documented.
  • Any information the AI cannot see is supplied through a reference image or Listing Hint.

Before publishing, confirm:

  • The first photo is your strongest overall image.
  • The final set contains only photos buyers should see.
  • No private information or unauthorized third-party content remains.
  • The photos match the generated description and condition details.
Better evidence creates a better first draft. Clear, intentional photos help SellBotAI identify more details while giving buyers the confidence to understand exactly what they are purchasing.
